Softball: Mustangs start fast, hold off Bucs

On a raw night, the only meeting of the season between host Gulf and Mitchell turned out to be a doozy. The Bucs and Mustangs won't meet again this season, but they treated those willing to fight the cold Wednesday to a 9-7 Mitchell victory. The Mustangs (3-0) led throughout after jumping out to a 3-0 lead, thanks to a Ciara Seymour two-run single to score Olivia Kline and Courtney Stager. Tasha Richard doubled to score Seymour to close out the inning. They rode the arm of Kline, whose power kept the Bucs (3-1) quiet offensively as Mitchell's lead climbed to 6-1. Kline notched 10 strikeouts and yielded only three walks. Gulf started chopping back, cutting the deficit to 7-3 in third inning then cut it to two before being shut down in the final at-bat. "We played near flawless defense," Gulf coach Rick Hohenthaner said. "Pitching killed us tonight. We walked seven and five of those girls scored. "For us that's uncharacteristic." Mitchell 9 Gulf 7
