Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

LARGO - Two teen-oriented events in March will give area youth a chance to show off their creative talents.

Teen musicians who can keep their lyrics clean and put together a 30-minute set are invited to register for the city's first Teenage Battle of the Bands, scheduled for March 8.

The event provides performance opportunities for talented young musicians who spend weekends jamming in their parents' garages, said Craig Dolan, Largo recreation program supervisor.

A separate event March 15 will showcase the works of youth who are into the visual arts. Teens have until March 3 to sign up to exhibit their creations in the Young at Art competition at the upcoming artists' market at Largo Central Park.

The second annual artists' market and teen art contest are sponsored by Partners N Progress, the fundraising arm of the Largo Cultural Center.

Teens can submit one entry in 14 different categories, including various painting mediums, graphics, jewelry, photography and sculpture.

The teen portion of the show provides kids a rare opportunity to exhibit and sell their artwork in a professional setting, said special events chairwoman Sue Osborne.

Organizers hope this year's submissions will rival the high quality of last year's entries, Osborne said.

"If you didn't know they were done by kids," she said, "you'd think they were from professional artists."
