TAMPA - In region quarterfinal action Thursday, Tampa Prep thumped All Saints' (14-10) 61-39, harassing the opposing team and surgically picking apart the All Saints' defense.
Tampa Prep played a technically-sound game, forcing 19 turnovers, while only committing eight of its own.
On offense, Tampa Prep (23-2) always made the extra pass to create an open shot. Jamal Cherry started strong for the Terrapins, notching 16 first-half points and finishing with a team-leading 21.
Despite an eight-point halftime lead, Tampa Prep coach Joe Fenlon felt his team could perform better.
"In the first half we didn't play with the effort we normally have," he said.
Terrapins center David Waller got the message, scoring 16 of his 20 points in the second half. After a 12-4 scoring run to start the third quarter, Tampa Prep was able to coast into the semifinals.
"We played with intensity at points, at this point we just want to advance. I'll always take an ugly win over a pretty loss" Fenlon said.
Forward Reggie Polite and point guard Gary Davis played strong for All Saints', scoring 19 and 14 points, respectively.
