Holland & Knight may be set for a smooth transition after managing partner Howell "Hal" Melton Jr. steps aside. The law firm said Friday that Steven Sonberg from the Miami office is the sole candidate vying for the top spot. Sonberg, chair of the firm's business law section, has been a partner at the Miami office for 15 years. Melton, who made the firm's bottom line a priority, announced recently that he's not running for re-election next month as he wraps up a five-year term.

Cott opens new U.S. headquarters
Gov. Charlie Crist was in Tampa on Friday to help celebrate the grand opening of Cott Corp.'s new digs at 5519 W Idlewild Ave. The Canadian beverage company has had a bottling plant in Tampa since 1997. The new "global office," which doubles Cott's Tampa employment to more than 200, serves as its U.S. headquarters. Its employees work with Cott operations in other countries, including the United Kingdom. The 60,000-square-foot building used many green building materials and products.

Cantor Fitzgerald must pay $1.75M
A "raid" on some of Raymond James & Associates offices will be costly for competitor Cantor Fitzgerald & Co. An arbitration panel for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority recently ordered Cantor, of New York, to pay Raymond James $1.75-million. Raymond James, of St. Petersburg, filed the dispute in 2005 claiming unfair competition and the raiding of employees and business from Raymond James' taxable fixed-income branches in several locations. Neither firm would comment on the case.
