Captain's corner

Offshore

Grouper fishing has continued to be good in depths of 50 feet or more. The cooler water had slowed the bite a little, but those who are patient have been making decent catches using a variety of cut baits. A chum basket placed on the bottom with a frozen chum block will help turn on the bite.

Inshore

Trout and redfish continue to cooperate in shallow flats. The best areas have been wind-protected shorelines with good sun exposure. Work these areas slowly with jigs and free-lined shrimp and use a slow retrieve with pauses because the fish are slow to respond to fast presentations. Those who enjoy fishing wind-protected canals and rivers on the North Suncoast will have good opportunities to get sheepshead by fishing dock pilings and oyster bars. Small shrimp and fiddler crabs work well when presented with a split shot and small No. 1 hook.
