Compiled from Times wires
Published February 18, 2008
ST. PETERSBURG--On the third and final day the Sperry Top-Sider National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta held in St. Petersburg, Tampa Bay area skippers Robbie Brown & Chuck Allen (St. Petersburg) were named the overall winners of the event.
Brown/ Allen and their boat Preperation J led the J/24 fleet all three days, finishing 18-points ahead of their next closest competitor Genoa Fedyszyn (St. Petersburg). The 18-point lead was the largest advantage among all 16 fleets.
As the overall winners in St. Petersburg, Brown/Allen will receive a trip to Sunsail in the British Virgin Islands in November to compete at the championship event against the winners from each of the additional eight stops on the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta series.
During today's final races on Tampa Bay, Brad and Spike Boston (Point Edward, Ont.) and Bay area skipper Mike Carroll (Tampa) tied in setting the record at five, for the most fleet victories at the St. Petersburg NOOD regatta.
In addition, Brad Boston also set another record for the most consecutive fleet wins at the St. Petersburg NOOD regatta.
The Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta series will sail on to San Diego, Calif., March 14-16, 2008. Additional venues for 2008 include Annapolis, Md., our newest site in Seattle, Wash., Detroit, Mich., Chicago, Ill., Marblehead, Mass., Larchmont, N.Y., and Houston, Tex.
Sperry Top-Sider is the national title sponsor of the 2008 St. Petersburg NOOD which is presented by Sailing World and Mount Gay Rum. Support sponsors who will join the event include Gill, Sunsail, North Sails, ClearPoint High Definition Weather, Newcastle Brown Ale, Active.com, Furuno and Lewmar.
Created by Sailing World in 1988, the NOODs attract nearly 2,000 boats and more than 30,000 competitors and spectators annually. Each event in the series features multiple days of sailboat racing for one-design models from 20 to 70 feet in length. In addition to local sailors, sailing's top stars - including America's Cup and Olympic champions - are well-represented at the NOODs. Competitive sailors rate the NOODs as the top national event in each region of the country.
