Bush urges renewal of aids program

Tanzania During his trip to Tanzania, President Bush rejected proposed Democratic changes to his prized AIDS relief program, issuing a challenge Sunday to Congress to "stop the squabbling" and renew it as is. Tanzanian leader Jakaya Kikwete made an impassioned appeal for the same thing. The program expires this year, and a political and ideological showdown is brewing in Washington over the initiative's terms and size. Elsewhere Washington: The U.S. intelligence chief, Mike McConnell, said Sunday that internal Hezbollah groups or Syria may be to blame for the killing of a Hezbollah commander in Syria last week that has led the FBI to put domestic terror squads on alert in the United States. Venezuela: President Hugo Chavez said Sunday that Venezuela is not preparing to cut off oil shipments to the United States. The socialist leader rattled oil markets a week ago when he threatened to halt shipments to the United States over a dispute with Exxon Mobil Corp. Israel: Four Palestinian militants were killed in clashes with the Israeli army in southern Gaza early Sunday and an Israeli soldier was seriously wounded. Iran: Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Sunday that God would punish Iranians if they do not support the country's disputed nuclear program. Times wires
