Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy has openings

COUNTYWIDE
Openings are available for the evening session of the next Hernando County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy, from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, March 6 through April 10. The academy offers an insider's view of the Sheriff's Office and the criminal justice system. During the six-week course, participants observe demonstrations by canine handlers and learn about forensics, uniform patrol, traffic unit, administration, investigations, vice and narcotics, communications/911, aviation and marine units, mounted patrol and legal issues and perspectives. Graduates will have the option of riding with a patrol deputy, flying in the helicopter and observing the communications center. The academy is available to adults 18 and older. Tickets for U.S. Army band concert all gone
The St. Petersburg Times and St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church have distributed all of the tickets for the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus concert scheduled for 3 p.m. March 16 at Grace World Outreach Church in Brooksville.

Youths invited to join birding workshop
A Junior Birding Workshop will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Chinsegut Nature Center, 23212 Lake Lindsey Road. Co-sponsored by the Hernando Audubon Society, the free program for children 16 and younger includes a bird walk, puppet show, bird games and a bird slide show. Landscaping Expo deadline is Friday
Friday is the deadline to register for the 2008 Florida-Friendly Landscaping Grow Smart Workshop and Natural Landscaping Expo, which will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the SNPJ Lodge, 13383 County Line Road. There will be door prizes, refreshments and educational materials. The cost is $10. Registration is limited and will be accepted on a first-paid, first-registered basis. Call 754-4433.
WEEKI WACHEE
Miss Weeki Wachee Pageant on Sunday
Star Search Pageants and Weeki Wachee Springs will hold the second annual Miss Weeki Wachee Pageant at 5 p.m. Sunday at the attraction, 6131 Commercial Way. All ages can join. All entrants must bring a donation for the Dawn Center. Information is available at www.WeekiWacheePageant.com. Admission to Weeki Wachee Springs will be $10, except for contestants.
