The Hernando Youth League wrapped up its basketball division playoff series last weekend, and Cortez Community Bank led the way by finishing its season undefeated at 10-0.
Cortez defeated Hernando Fire & Safety 79-59 in a real offensive shootout. In the end, the inside-outside combination of center Tyler Bergantino 23 points and point guard Matthew Bennett (17 points) was more than enough to lead the dominant Cortez squad to the Junior Varsity championship. Hernando Fire's Bobby Conway led his team with a game-high 24 points.
The Advanced Division title was decided in a 33-24 win by Florida Insurance Brokers over Brooksville Blue Print. Springstead Orthodontics finished up an outstanding season by defeating Patriot Lending 25-10 for the Beginners Division crown.
Garvey's 600 : Connor Garvey, a youth bowler who competes in the Spring Hill Youth/Adult League on Sunday nights at Spring Hill Lanes, was able to toss a 615 series Feb. 10.
Garvey, who teams with his brother Kyle Garvey, his father, Jack Garvey, and Junior Beatty, posts a 175 average in the league, up 25 pins from his 150 average last season.
The 615 was the fourth-highest total that night in the league, behind only three other adult male competitors: Scott Dooley (666), George Tompkins (627) and Vic Oliver (625). Garvey's games of 222, 199 and 194 completed the strong scratch series.
Brooksville Bombers: The Brooksville Bombers are the only 8-and-under AAU baseball club in Hernando County.
Coached by Dominic Orlando, the Bombers are 7-3 and just finished a doubleheader against West Florida Young Guns on Feb. 17. The Young Guns are out of Hudson and are the closest AAU team that Brooksville plays on its regular season schedule.
Brooksville dropped both ends of the twin bill, losing the first game 15-8, and the second game in a heartbreaker, 9-8. Dalton Mosser went 5-for-6 with four RBIs and two doubles.
Sunday, the Bombers will again lock up with the Young Guns on Brooksville's home field at Ernie Weaver Park.
Hernando Lacrosse Golf Tourney: The Hernando Lacrosse Club is holding its inaugural HLC Golf Tournament at Seven Hills Golf Course on March 9.
The tournament's proceeds will benefit the costs associated with fielding teams for the Hernando Lacrosse Club. The format for the tournament will be a four-person scramble.
Registration will open at 10:30 a.m. and the shotgun start for the festivities will be at noon. Entry fee is $50 that fee includes a golf cart, bottled water and dinner after the tournament.
All personal checks need to be made out to HLC coordinator Greg Longo. Registration is also available online prior to the event at www.golfplacementservices.com/HernandoLacrosse. Sponsors are still being taken for the event and for more information, contact Longo at (352) 200-6111.
