Man charged with killing mom, stepdad
Jackie Lee Braden is no longer a "person of interest" in the slayings last week of his mother and stepfather, Sherrill and David Wright. Now authorities say he is the person responsible for their deaths. Braden, 36, was arrested Thursday on two counts of first-degree murder. Braden's mother, Sherrill Wright, 54, was gunned down in her own bedroom, according to a search warrant made public Thursday. She was dressed in her pajamas, shot three times in the face and body. Stepfather David Wright, 54, was found shot in the back of the head, the warrant said, sitting in his recliner. Braden was in the Pinellas County Jail when he was arrested in the two Pasco murders.
Transient accused of attempted rape
Pinellas County sheriff's detectives have arrested a man wanted in connection with an attempted rape on Wednesday. Anthony South II, 23, whom detectives listed as transient, faces one count each of attempted sexual battery and carrying a concealed weapon, according to a Sheriff's Office report. The victim, a 20-year-old woman whose name was not released, was walking in the 200 block of Avery Avenue in Crystal Beach in northwest Pinellas County at about 2 a.m. Wednesday when the suspect ran out from behind some bushes and knocked her to the ground, the report stated. During the attack, something startled the suspect and he ran away. The next day, Detective Jeremy Lewis was canvassing the neighborhood where the incident occurred, when he saw a man that matched the suspect's description. The detective discovered that South had a handgun and took him to jail, where South later admitted to attacking the woman, the report stated. South remained in the Pinellas County Jail late Thursday.
Brandon man arrested in robbery
The man accused of robbing a Wesley Chapel Wachovia bank earlier this month was arrested Thursday in Hillsborough County. Pasco deputies say Naleqwinn Williams, 26, of Brandon handed a teller a note about 3:30 p.m. Feb. 8 and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. Williams is at the Orient Road Jail facing robbery charges. His bail is set at $500,000.
Suspicions lead to stolen car, drugs
Suspicious behavior by several people inside a Wal-Mart led to two arrests Wednesday and quite a haul for deputies: dozens of prescription pills, plus cocaine and methamphetamine, and nearly $3,000 worth of $20 bills, blank prescription sheets, drug paraphernalia and a stolen car. Store managers became suspicious of several people about 4 a.m. and called the police. Hernando sheriff's deputies questioned four people, including Scott Wayne Long and Sylvia Renee Daniels, in the parking lot. Daniels, 31, faces counts of trafficking in oxycodone, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a stolen car. In addition to a charge of possession of a controlled substance, Long, 29, was also charged with giving a false name to authorities.
