Organizers of Fun Festival look for help

Participants and sponsors are needed for the Week of the Young Child Fun Festival, which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 19 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, off Darby Lane. The free annual event includes entertainment and activities and promotes the need for quality education and child care. There also will be exhibits by local agencies. The event is funded and put on by local businesses and organizations, and is sponsored in part by the St. Petersburg Times. All volunteers and groups are welcome. There are openings for the evening session of the next Hernando County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy, which will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, March 6 to April 10. Participants will observe demonstrations by K-9 handlers, tour the Sheriff's Office and learn about forensics, uniform patrol, traffic unit, administration, investigations, vice and narcotics, communications/911, the aviation and marine units, the mounted patrol and legal issues and perspectives. Course graduates will have the option of riding along with a patrol deputy, flying in the helicopter or observing in the communications center.
