Today
Softball, Pinellas Park (6-3) at Tarpon Springs (5-1), 7 p.m.: The surprising Spongers, who have already defeated East Lake and Palm Harbor U., are 5-0 in 5A-9 and can make it through the first round of district games unscathed with a victory. The Patriots also come in undefeated in the district at 3-0, which means sole possession of first place is up for grabs.
Wednesday
Boys basketball, Brandon (24-4) vs. Lakewood (28-2) at the Lakeland Center, 8:30 p.m.: This is the first meeting between two of area’s dominant public school programs. The Spartans already are the program of the decade and can add to their legacy by winning their third state title since 2000.
Thursday
Tennis, Palm Harbor University vs. St. Petersburg, St. Pete Tennis Center, 3 p.m.: Both teams have strong boys and girls programs. Last season, the Hurricane boys beat the Green Devils for the first time in a contest that came down to the last doubles match.
Friday
Softball, East Lake (3-2) at Countryside (7-0), 4 p.m.: East Lake is on a roll, having won its past three games after opening the season with two losses. More good news for the Eagles: senior pitcher Kim Mazzapica should play her first game this week after missing time with a groin injury. It’s early, but the Cougars look like the county’s top team right now.
Track: West Coast Invitational at Lakewood, 1 p.m.: The meet, one of the oldest in the county, serves as a tuneup for what will be a busy March for the sport.
