Although the skirmish known as the Battle of Ballast Point occurred at what is now the intersection of Bayshore and Gandy boulevards in Tampa, re-enactors over the weekend chose Fort De Soto Park to showcase their knowledge of this era of U.S. history. On Friday, the first day of a three-day event, more than 1,000students attended the re-enactment. They participated in activities like drilling (marching) station, field artillery and music, and learned about the Southern Telegraph Co., the spinning wheel, cotton production, women of the Civil War, the Union cavalry and sailors. Battle ceased Sunday.
