Pinellas: County roundup
By BRYAN BURNS
Published February 27, 2008
Four errors spelled a 5-0 defeat for St. Petersburg Catholic at home against Clearwater Central Catholic in one of the few county games to finish before rain and lightning swept through the area, canceling much of Tuesday's preps action.
CCC (5-0, 2-0) scored three in the first. Matt Morelli hit a solo home run in the third inning and James Dowdell added his own in the fifth. The game was called because of lightning in the area after five innings, making the result official.
Trevor Campbell gave up one hit to run his record to 2-0 for the Marauders. SPC falls to 1-2, 1-1 in District 3A-11.
Berkeley Prep 6, Shorecrest 2
Entering the sixth inning tied at 2, Shorecrest surrendered four in the final two innings in a nondistrict loss at home.
Robby Thigpen hit a home run for the Chargers, who fell to 4-2.
Northside Christian 13, Calvary 0
Sophomore catcher Kyle Turner hit a three-run homer in the first inning, igniting a Northside offense that put up 13 runs on Calvary at home in a five-inning game.
Pitcher Robbie Williams, also a sophomore, gave up two hits over four innings to improve to 2-0.
Northside (3-3) climbs to .500 as Calvary Christian falls to 0-7.
SOFTBALL
CCC 10, Calvary Christian 4
Sophomore outfielder Jenna Lee had a monster day for CCC as the Marauders routed Calvary Christian at home.
Lee was a single shy of the cycle in CCC's victory over the Warriors (2-3).
"That girl is amazing," CCC coach Meghan Kimsey said. "She can kill the ball. She's gotten a double almost every game."
CCC starter Sara Higinbotham struck out 10 to improve to 4-3. Next up for CCC (4-3, 2-0): critical district (3A-11) contests against Tampa Catholic (2-2, 1-2) Thursday and St. Petersburg Catholic (5-0, 3-0) Tuesday.
Tampa Prep 10, IRC 0
Indian Rocks fell in its district opener in a five-inning game.
Kristen Kelsey (4-1) threw a one-hitter for the Terrapins (4-1), who took advantage of eight Indian Rocks (0-5) errors.
TENNIS
Pinellas Park 4, Dunedin 3
Shane Casey has had a great year for Pinellas Park at No. 1 singles, according to coach Tom Schaenou. Casey's 8-0 victory in singles and 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles helped the Patriots (2-3) squeak by Dunedin (3-2) at home.
"He's really coming along and playing great," Schaenou said of Casey, who splits time between the baseball and tennis teams in the spring. "He played terrific today."
Dunedin 6, Pinellas Park 1
The Dunedin girls improved to 2-3 with a convincing victory on the road over Pinellas Park (1-4).
The Falcons won both doubles matches and four of five singles matches.
