What is the most commonly used five-letter word in crossword puzzles?

"Erase" is the most often used answer for a five- letter word, says Will Shortz, New York Times crossword editor. The most common answer? Era. Journalist Arthur Wynne is credited with inventing the crossword puzzle in 1913. Today, nearly 50-million Americans are crossword puzzlers. The 31st annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament is in New York today through Sunday.
