  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

A big batch of "heart saver soup" is prepared at a past fest.

SAFETY HARBOR - If you've been hankering for a reptile or amphibian snack and really, who hasn't? this is going to be your lucky weekend.

Those in the mood for food will have a chance to enjoy gator tails and frogs legs as well as an array of gustatory grandeur including shrimp, grouper, scallops, crab cakes, lobster and chowder at the Safety Harbor Seafood Festival.

The event is from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Safety Harbor Marina.

"We'll have over 60 vendors from around the state, including the Thirsty Marlin," said Joe Cooper, the city's special events coordinator.

Cooper said that in past years, the free event has been known to draw more than 7,500 people a day.

It will feature nonstop entertainment on the Budweiser True Music Stage. Music will include acoustic guitar, rock, rockabilly, reggae and ska.

For the kids, there will be arts and crafts, bounce castles, a rock wall and face painting.

Look up and you might see the Treasure Island Sport Kite Klub and the Sunset Flyers demonstrating their most striking kites on the back lawn of the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa.

"It will be very colorful," Cooper said.

First timers can learn to make their own kites and receive flying instructions from the experts.

Aside from the seafood and the activities, visitors will find the setting spectacular and a great place to enjoy the best food the sea has to offer, Cooper said.

"I think it's the nicest venue in Tampa Bay," he said.
