Injured eagle being cared for at sanctuary

EAST LAKE Rescuers from the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary recovered a battered bald eagle Thursday near one of North Pinellas' best-known eagle nests. Neighbors in the Grey Oaks subdivision, off East Lake Road just south of Pinellas-Pasco line, spotted the injured bird. They notified Audubon Society eagle watchers, who contacted the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary. Avian care specialist Rick Gechter came and caught the bird to take it back to the hospital. He said the bird had a punctured wing and injuries on the right side of its face, though its eye is still there. Eagle watchers are concerned it might be one of a pair of eagles that have raised two or three eaglets for years in a pine tree in a sanctuary next to the Grey Oaks subdivision. The injured eagle appeared to have been in a fight, but eagle watcher Barb Walker said no one knew if the injured bird was the nesting father eagle or an intruder. She also was concerned about whether babies in the nest have been left with just one parent.
