Today's Letters: Will we ever hear the whole story?

Re: Jobless, homeless stats don't tell the whole story, Feb. 27, Jeff Webb column

On the other side of the same sheet of paper, the headline reads Bus may go to 4-day week.

I look forward to the day when the whole story does get told.

The price of a gallon of gas has been suggested by some knowledgeable prognosticators to reach $4 per gallon this summer. I would have thought our "leaders" would be exploring options to expand public transportation.

Later, in staff writer Barbara Behrendt's piece, we learn of the crush of activity at the Property Appraiser's Office because of those new homestead exemptions. Do we know the value of the homes?

At the same time we reduce taxes for those with nice homes, we eliminate transportation for residents without cars.

I wish I could say I was surprised.

Save gas, money on THE Bus

With gas prices jumping so fast, why not ride THE Bus? The ride is great and there are new stores coming in - JC Penney, Marshall's, etc. Plus, we get there so fast and know it's a safe ride, and you meet people.

The bus drivers are helpful in every way getting on and off THE Bus and to where you want to go.

Agency leader hits the ground running Feb. 25, story

Glad to see new faces on coalition

As I have been a severe critic of the Pasco Hernando Early Learning Coalition in the past, culminating in my walking off the board, I was pleased to learn of the appointment of James Farrelly as executive director. By all accounts, he brings long overdue talent and energy the board.

I was also pleased to learn of Susan Arnett's appointment to a Pasco seat on the board. I would still suggest that a change in board leadership is long overdue and would go a long way to healing the wounds among Pasco and Hernando members.

The board must remember and admit the errors of the past if it is to function wisely in the future. I will continue to watch from the sidelines and not hesitate to raise issues as I see them, hopefully more positive. After all, they are responsible for spending $25-million in taxes annually.

Re: Race for president more like a lengthy reality show, Feb. 28, guest column

Race's problems spelled out nicely

Congratulations to Jack Bray for his lucid guest column. It is the first time anyone has clearly stated what is wrong with the current race for president.

Spurred on by the primaries, the process has become a marathon with "endless voting days and mind-numbing debates," he wrote. The process also has become a colossal and egregious waste of money.

The United States has become a third-world country where the election is bought, not earned.
