Bill Nesmith is accused of aggravated domestic assault.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Chief Bill Nesmith was arrested after he threatened to shoot his wife and himself, according to Pinellas County authorities.
Nesmith, 59, denied making the threat but was arrested on an aggravated domestic assault charge, according to a sheriff's report. Records show he was booked into the Pinellas County Jail at 12:06 a.m. Sunday and his bail was set at $5,000.
A deputy responded to Nesmith's home Saturday about 9:50 p.m. on a domestic violence call, according to an arrest report.
Nesmith allegedly assaulted his wife with a "deadly weapon," the report said. The report did not indicate where the incident took place.
Nesmith owns a revolver and a semiautomatic handgun, which deputies seized during the arrest. The report said Nesmith's wife feared for her life and left home, thinking her husband would follow through on his threat.
She didn't know whether the guns were in the house when Nesmith allegedly made the threat, but she assumed he was going to get a gun when he went into the couple's bedroom, the report said.
Hillsborough Fire Rescue Capt. Bruce Delk said Sunday night he had not spoken with Nesmith since his arrest, but said the chief had been bailed out of jail. Nesmith has not been placed on leave, Delk said.
"He was charged with aggravated assault domestic. He wasn't convicted," Delk said. "If that occurs, then we'll deal with whatever happens. Our policy has been, in the past, that people work as normal until they're convicted of something."
Nesmith could not be reached.
Hillsborough County Commissioner Rose Ferlita said Nesmith should be placed on administrative leave.
"Regardless of whether he's guilty or not, it's a serious charge," she said.
Ferlita said she knew nothing of Nesmith's personal life, but was surprised to hear Hillsborough's fire chief was living in Pinellas County.
Nesmith has served as the Hillsborough County fire chief since October 1996. He spent more than 24 years with Tampa Fire Rescue before retiring as a division chief and joining Hillsborough Fire Rescue in 1994 as an assistant chief.
Nesmith is the current past president of the Florida Fire Chief's Association and he has served as an instructor for basic firefighter certification and management level courses through Hillsborough Community College.

I know the wife... and, anyone else who knows her also knows she is the most NON confrontational person you can imagine!! I guarantee she went through hell before calling 911. The wife doesn't need his divorce money.. she has her own!!

1st off, Candi you are way off base.I would assume you are friends with Bill. This may not have been a match made in "Heaven", but i do know the wife, this was not the outcome she wanted. She was scared for her life. Does that not justify a 911 call?

He violated county policy by having a weapon in his "work vehicle". He was also drunk and had two guns in his possession. Bill needs to be fired, for he is not setting a good example. Jim, you don't have the facts, but you defend him blindly.

I've known Bill a long time and the only thing he's guilty of is making bad choices in wifes. His currently wife has said she wanted one half of his possessions after being married just over 4 months. How appropriate is that?
Let them move on.

here we go again...........alcohol! When do we turn away from this accepted drug. Had he not been drunk, this would NOT have happened to this extreme. A gun? Shame on you, he should be fired for that offense on county property.

After reading the comment's i think the wife must be a pain in the a--. He need's to get rid of her. Sound's like he is a great guy. But when you have a spouse nagging and causing trouble all the time I guess you get fed up. She might have went nuts.

Kim has it right. Billy is a good man and a great public servant. Who cares if he lives in Pinellas County. I have known Rose Ferlita for almost 50 years. She is, to put it mildly, ONE BIG BUSY BODY. Rose, please mind your own business/house. Jim

Maybe he did it, maybe he didn't. I do know that women can be crazy and make accusations to get the man in trouble. She knows darn well this accusation will ruin his carrer. Maybe he's trying to leave her for having an affair! Give him a chance!

People have known my husband and I for years too, and it was only after our doctor saw the injuries he inflicted did he get reported. DO NOT LET knowing him fool you. You do not know what goes on behind closed doors. I'm living proof of that!!!!!!

Wait just a minute. Go get police reports and see just how often they use the word assume when they make arrests. If I had someone threaten to shoot me, I'd report them too. Domestic violence is scary, and women as well as men should report it.

Ladies and Gentlemen: I have known Billy for 40 years. I cannot possibly imagine the allegations made by his estranged wife are true. This sure seems like the words of a spiteful, scorn woman out to thrash the career and life of a fine man. Jim

Interesting- how many people here who are posting in a calm manner, defending his right to presumptive innocence, also posted that those with complaints against deputies get what they deserve as they were arrested? He should be counseled, that's all.

Innocent until proven guilty. Quite frankly I do not believe the wife. Women are very ruthless and love revenge. No doubt more smut will follow and it will be pointed at the wife. I bet anyone she was/is having an affair.

Bill Nesmith is nothing less than a gentleman. This is a "she said vs he said". Even the article stated that she "assumed" he was going to go get a gun. Sounds like a bad arrest based solely on the assumption of one person's perception.

When someone is charged with a violent crime, I don't think they should be treated as "normal until they're convicted"...shouldn't a psychologist ensure this man is fit to serve the public before he goes back to work? Take this very seriously.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Both men and women can throw out untrue accusations in a fit of anger.
The politicians need to stay out of it and let his bosses and the law handle it.

Unless any of you have endured a relationship where domestic violence occurred or grew up in a home where it happened... you probably are not aware of how long it actually takes someone to reach out for help. Compassion not judgement is needed here.
