Libraries invite to free showing of 'Dreamgirls' and two book-signings

Hernando County Public Library System will offer the following programs and events:
-The movie Dreamgirls, 2 p.m. Tuesday, East Hernando Branch Library, 6457 Windmere Road, Ridge Manor West. The 2006 movie is rated PG-13. Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, a trio of black female soul singers from Chicago goes on to be a crossover hit on the pop charts in the early 1960s. The film, which won two Oscars, stars Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson. Light refreshments will be served. Free. Call 754-4443.
-A book-signing and discussion with authors Diane and David Munson will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hernando/Staffordene T. Foggia Branch Library, 6335 Blackbird Ave., Spring Hill. The authors will discuss their most recent novel, The Camelot Conspiracy, a suspense thriller about a television reporter Mary Katherine Kowicki, who receives evidence about President John F. Kennedy's assassination from a retired Chicago police detective, who worked on the assassination case in November 1963. After the presentation will be a book-signing. -The Brooksville Book Discussion Group will meet at 10:30 a.m. March 8 at Lyke Memorial Library, 238 Howell Ave., Brooksville. The book to be discussed is Nineteen Minutes, by Jodi Picoult. It is about Sterling, a small, ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens - until the day its complacency is shattered by a shocking act of violence. In its aftermath, the town's residents must not only seek justice but also come to terms with the roles they played in the tragedy. The story focuses on Josie Cormier, the teenage daughter of the judge sitting on the case. She could be the state's best witness, but she can't remember what happened.

Art League, businesses will host treasure hunt
The Spring Hill Art League has joined forces with eight local businesses to present the "Treasure Hunt on the Hill" from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in downtown Brooksville. The event coordinates with the artist's wine and cheese reception for Muriel Prieto at Easy Street Home Decor, 838 E Jefferson St.
The treasure hunt starts and ends at Easy Street. Participants visit each business in search of a clue, a code word pertaining to that business. The 26th person to return all eight correct code words back to Easy Street will win $100. There is no cost to participate and no purchases are necessary.
Participating businesses include Rogers Christmas House, the Paper Porch, Mallie Kayla's Cafe, Westover's Flowers and Gifts, the White Daisy Salon and Spa formerly Sombodies Secret, Peade Tree Trading, Coney Island Drive-In and Easy Street.

Christian Women will hold luncheon
The Brooksville/Spring Hill Women's Connection (Christian Women's Club) will host a luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m. March 11 at Silverthorn Country Club, 4550 Golf Club Lane.
The feature will be Paul Dellagatto, chief meteorologist for Fox 13 News. The speaker will be Joyce Schneider of Naples, who will discuss "Ripping Off the Band-Aids."

Flea market planned for Saturday

Cancer Crushers offer barbecue for a cause
The Cortez Cancer Crushers, the Relay for Life team at Cortez Community Bank, will host a barbecue and yard sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 15 in the parking lot at the bank, 1000 S Broad St.
The cost for the barbecue meal is $10, which includes ribs, baked beans and cole slaw.

Water Awareness Series back on Friday
Hernando County Utilities and Citizens for WATER will present the next session of the 2008 Hernando County Water Awareness Series from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Utilities Department, 21030 Cortez Blvd.
The topic will be "A New Perspective and Protection for Florida's Springs." The speakers will be Dave DeWitt, a professional geologist with Southwest Florida Water Management District, and Brett Hemphill with Karst Underwater Research, a cave diving group based in the Tampa Bay area that has recently been mapping and exploring the Weeki Wachee spring system.
