GPS got pups to safety by tracking 'Momma Dog'
Seminole County jail workers had been feeding a stray dog for weeks, leaving out bacon and other treats. When they were able to catch her, they realized she was loaded with milk. Trouble is, they couldn't find her pups. They tried putting "Momma Dog" on a leash to see if she would show them the way, but she just lay down, the Orlando Sentinel reports. When that didn't work, an animal services supervisor turned to the county's corrections department. Could she borrow a GPS unit, she asked. Within an hour, they tracked her to her den, deep in the woods. The pups - two girls and two boys - are now available for adoption in Sanford.
Also being tracked: upper-crust eaglet
Nestled in a multimillion-dollar Port St. Lucie golf community is 120 acres set aside for a family of four - bald eagles, that is. The habitat is the result of a partnership between Audubon of Florida and the developer, Ginn. Co. Scientists on Monday attached a device to one of the eaglets to track its first flight and daily migration as it soars from Florida to as far north as Canada, the Associated Press reports. The public eventually will be able to monitor the eaglet's progress online. The bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list last year, but experts say constant study is still needed.
