BROOKSVILLE - A 47-year-old Brooksville man was arrested Wednesday in an armed robbery at Center State Bank at 704 S Broad St.
Michael Edmund Pride approached a female bank employee in the parking lot about 7:45 a.m. and ordered her to open the door, police said. When Pride realized the bank's vault could not be opened, he took unidentified items and property from the woman and ran off, police said.
It is unclear how police were able to identify and capture Pride later in the day. Brooksville police Chief George Turner didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.
Pride was booked into Hernando County Jail on charges of armed robbery, attempted bank robbery and kidnapping, according to the Brooksville police. Jail records didn't immediately identify the charges or bail that Pride would be facing as of Wednesday afternoon.
A letter was left on the front of the bank's entrance Wednesday morning alerting customers that the bank would be closed "due to circumstances beyond our control." The bank normally opens at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday.
Gray Schraut, a Brooksville Coldwell Banker broker who owns the building, said he was just pleased that no one got hurt during the incident. "The money can be replaced," Schraut said, "but lives can't."
Police have asked anyone with information about the case to call Detective John Messer at (352) 754-6818 or Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-866-990-TIPS (8477).
Girl, 16, reports that man recorded sex acts
BROOKSVILLE - A 43-year-old Brooksville man faces criminal charges after being accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl and recording the acts on a Web cam.
Kim Curtis was arrested Tuesday and charged with unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Curtis remained in the Hernando County Jail on Wednesday in lieu of $30,000 bail. Should Curtis post bail, he will be required to wear a GPS monitor and not be allowed to have contact with anyone under the age of 18.
Detectives said the teen came to them Saturday evening, hours after having sexual intercourse with Curtis. The girl told authorities that she had sex with Curtis at least five times on camera, dating back to Oct. 26.
A witness verified the girl's story, detectives said, telling them he watched movies of Curtis and the girl. Curtis showed the man the movies, according to an arrest report.
Curtis, who is disabled, has a tattoo on his right biceps that reads "Revenge" and is sometimes known as "Red," has denied having sex with the girl.
