Man captured after threat at spa

Hung T. Ha may be in the U.S. illegally, officials say.

ST. PETERSBURG - A 32-year-old man accused of threatening a woman with a gun on Monday has been arrested on various charges, including attempted murder.

Hung T. Ha was arguing with Hongphuc Thi Nguyen, 28, at the Diva Day Spa on 22nd Avenue N when he suddenly pulled her into an office, locked the door and then pulled a gun, police said. His arrest affidavit suggests that Ha is in the country illegally.

Ha put the gun against the woman's back and squeezed the trigger twice, but the gun didn't fire for reasons that are unclear, police said. Other employees at the spa unlocked the door and made their way into the office, but Ha fled.

Police said the two argued over a green card. According to arrest affidavits, Ha and Nguyen were engaged and had recently broken up. Police say Ha had cash and a passport when he was arrested Tuesday, and appeared to be trying to leave the country. He also faces charges of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and using a firearm in a felony.
