Captain's Corner
By Larry Hoffman, Times Correspondent

What's hot: Grouper fishing in state waters is excellent. Capt. Garner Koons, Mike Hubbard and Steve Proctor fished five miles off the beach and landed eight keeper gags, a few mangrove snapper, white grunts and a few trigger fish. Kingfish have shown up in good numbers. At the North Skyway pier they have been catching kings up to 30 pounds. Bait and tackle: Koons reported that the gags were feeding on live pinfish and dead sardines. They downsized their tackle from 60 pounds to 30. Forty-pound carbon leaders with 3-0 leader and a 5-0 offset hook worked best. Tips: Near-shore grouper fishing is excellent. Set up over small ledges in 30 to 40 feet of water in state waters and put out a couple of flat lines. Larry "Huffy" Hoffman charters out of John's Pass, Treasure Island.
