Author Karen Brown will read her stories

Karen Brown will read and sign her collection of stories, Pins and Needles, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Inkwood Books, 216 S Armenia Ave.

Her collection received the AWP's Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction and her stories have appeared in numerous literary magazines. She lives in Tampa and has taught creative writing at both the University of South Florida and the University of Tampa. Call the store at 253-2638.

Fashion, hair design and art celebrated

Tribeca ColorSalon will hold its second annual Heart Show beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday at Czar nightclub, 1420 E Seventh Ave. The event is a celebration of hair design, fashion, art and music.

Entertainment will include performances by Tampa Bay Derby Darlins skaters and the Tampa Bay Storm Dancers, and live music with D-Visitors, Velveteen Pink, and Bronze4. A silent auction will benefit the James Anthony Ray Sadler Scholarship Fund that will go toward the education of a Hillsborough County high school student. Tickets are $12 if purchased in advance at Tribeca ColorSalon, 920 W Kennedy Blvd., or $15 at the door.

Fundraiser to aid child with cancer

Gaspar's Cigar Shop will host a fundraiser to benefit the Killette family, whose 10-year-old son was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoblastic lymphoma.

The event will feature jumping castles and face-painting for kids and spaghetti for everybody with a $10 donation per plate. Beverages will be available as well. The fundraiser is from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, at 3675 S West Shore Blvd. For more information, call the store at 831-0100.

Seminars in Spanish for small businesses

The Hispanic Business Initiative Fund, or HBIF, will hold a series of seminars in Spanish aimed at small businesses throughout March.

The workshop, "How to Start a Business," is from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, at Town & Country Regional Public Library, Thompson Center, 5455 W Water Ave., Suite 208. The same workshop will be held March 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, at EPI Center, 13805 58th N, Room 231, Clearwater.

"How to Start a Restaurant Business" is from 3 to 5:30 p.m. March 20, at the HBIF location on 7402 N 56th St., Suite 425, Tampa. Genealogy group gives online tips

The Florida Genealogical Society, which celebrates its 50th anniversary, will hold its monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. March 15 in the John F. Germany Library auditorium, 900 N Ashley Drive.

Goodwill can use children's books

Goodwill's BookWorks, a program that promotes literacy for children from low-income households, needs donations of new or like-new books for preschool-age children.

Child Abuse Council names board members

The Child Abuse Council Inc. has appointed the following new members to its board of directors for 2008:

Donna Anderson, USF College of Education faculty member; Joanne Angel, Department of Health, Children's Medical Services executive community health nursing director; Jamie Broome, Raymond James Trust Co. wealth administrator; Chad W. Callahan III, attorney with Hill, Ward & Henderson; Graeme Frasier, Bank of Tampa commercial banking officer; Claudia Rickert Isom, judge for Division H, Circuit Civil Court; and Antoinette Spoto-Cannons, assistant professor of Pediatrics with the Department of Pediatrics, USF College of Medicine.

Also, a new Executive Council of the board for 2008 was elected: Jean Amuso, president; Mary Gamble, president-elect; Robert Jesski, immediate past president; Liz Hopkins, treasurer; and Larry Guilford, secretary.
