CLEARWATER The downtown Main Library has a lot of friends and many are upset by the prospect of the library's cafe closing. The board of directors of the Friends of the Clearwater Library this week sent City Council members a letter, saying they wanted to "express our dissatisfaction with the closing of the (library's) cafe." As it stands, the cafe's owner would like to sell the business, but city officials, saying there's been too much turnover in ownership, is thinking about closing the cafe's doors and replacing the operation with vending machines. The letter, signed by Friends president Rita Garvey, states: "If the decision is to have no cafe, we strongly urge that there be nothing but open space. Definitely no vending machines."
