MCCAIN-CRIST TICKET? CANDIDATE NONCOMMITTAL

Plenty of national media have weighed in on whether Gov. Charlie Crist will be Sen. John McCain's running mate, but what about the Republican candidate himself? Asked Thursday while Crist campaigned with him in West Palm Beach, McCain demurred. "I know one thing about Gov. Crist," McCain said. "And that is that he is a great governor. He does a great job. And I think that ... there are many ways for him to serve the country." McCain says he hasn't even started a list of candidates yet. "We, in fact, have not even outlined how we're going to go about this ... but I know that Gov. Crist will continue to serve this country in many respects in the future. He's still a very young man."
 

Dexter the dog still needs a new loving human, home

More than 50 people called the Humane Society of Tampa Bay on Thursday after reading a Times story about 12-year-old dogs Dexter and Avery, whose owner recently lost his home to foreclosure. Avery was adopted late Wednesday; her brother, Dexter, is still available. Several people said they were interested, and shelter officials remain hopeful he will be adopted soon. Animal shelters are seeing an influx of animals whose owners have lost their homes and can't bring pets to an apartment or relative's home.

Sex offenders get 24 hours to vacate mobile homes

Hillsborough County commissioners took the action after residents complained, citing a year-old "safety zone" ordinance to back the action.
