  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

After her mother, a cryptogram fan, died, Hazel Pryor didn't immediately cancel the cryptogram publications to which she subscribed. Now Hazel has 2007 and 2008 editions of these magazines, which she'd like to put into the hands of somebody whoenjoys these puzzles as much as her mother did.

Twelve from Kappa Publishing include six titled Cryptograms, and six titled Cryptograms Special. A book from Sterling Publishing is titled Humorous Cryptograms. Please call 727 347-6995 if you need to be puzzled.

Christine Robinson of Largo thinks her coffee table, which is in very good condition, may look lovely in your living room. It is oak, 55 inches long by 25 inches wide, with four glass inserts 9 inches by 12 inches. Please call (727) 532-2354.

Jean Schmidt is a woman looking for a good slide viewer. She's ready to put those old slides on CDs and host a grand showing of her past adventures to her children and grandchildren, but she needs to cull out the duplicates (and lousy shots!) first. Jean may be contacted by e-mail at jean_schmidt@msn.com.

Along the same line, another reader, this time Carl Andrews of Hudson, needs an 8mm projector for the family films. Please call either (260) 750-2676 or (260) 417-0896.

Have you ever prayed that the kayak or canoe in your yard would magically disappear, or be purloined by a passing seafarer? Probably not, but just in case you have, E. Dosreis would love to have that kayak or canoe to explore local rivers with his grandchildren. Please call (727) 937-0443 or e-mail paibeico@hotmail.com.

Tonie Kieres of St. Petersburg needs books that address knitting afghans in strips that are then sewed together. She awaits your call at (727) 392-2647.

A writer from Hudson exercises with a group to a DVD that is being worn out by frequent use. The DVD is one of 10 in a collection titled 10 Best Fitness; the exercise group needs disc four, side B, "Back in Action" to get, well, back in action. If you can help, please call (727) 868-8759.

In Exchange Land, it's never too early to start thinking about Christmas, as you know. Maryanne Freeman of New Port Richey is hoping to find a Santa Claus suit that lacks a Santa for the 2008 holidays. Her church needs to clothe its jolly St. Nick, who is not only rotund, requiring an XL size, but Xtra Tall, 6 feet 8. Santa entertains the seniors and children in the congregation, so of course we hope he is decently covered! Maryanne will pick up the suit in her locale or subsidize postage to mail it; please call (727) 841-7631.

Instructions availability alert! After 21 years of faithful service, Mary Avedisian's 1986 Toyota Camry died, leaving her with beautiful memories and two manuals, a 1986 Owner's Guide and 1986 Owner's Manual. If your elderly Camry is still beating the odds and lacks either of these guides, please call (727) 784-0646.

Juanita Rogers is a quilter who is ready to pass the torch, so to speak. Rheumatoid arthritis is keeping her from making use of the quilting books and instructions she has accrued, so she hopes a beginning quilter may find them helpful. Please call (727) 869-1935 or e-mail cmaddmax1@aol.com.

Margaret Hunter of Clearwater would like to find a no-longer-needed HP printer that would be compatible with WebTV. Margaret may be contacted at (727) 791-7610.

Thank-you notes

Olga wants to thank readers who sent her the craft items, fabric and old books and magazinesshe requested. But don't stop now, she urges. If you still wish to donate, don't hesitate to call (727) 398-4558.

Bill Syms, who wrote in a quest to find a Zapper, a device to disarm telemarketers, received all kinds of help to dodge their efforts. Some readers mailed or delivered Zappers, and Bill was very glad to lay eyes on the gadgets again. Others suggested places to call or write to reduce telemarketing calls. Many mentioned the best zapper of all, the Do Not Call List, which Bill contacted shortly after learning about it. To all these helpful people, Bill extends a big thanks.

The intrepid members of the Holiday Ladies Missionary Class, who have sent more than 13,000 Bible verse cards to Nigeria already this year, wish to thank all the readers who mailed or brought cards to the church after the Christmas card list was printed. The ladies would like to thank everyone personally, but it's pretty obvious they're far too busy to attempt that.

Send requests to Reader Exchange, Floridian, St. Petersburg Times, P.O. Box 1121, St. Petersburg33731 or e-mail cole@sptimes.com. Requests will be accepted only by mail or e-mail. This is an exchange column, so we will not run items that are for sale. Readers must agree to publication of phone numbers, including area code.
