CLEARWATER

The $250-million Kiran Grand Resort and Spa on Clearwater Beach is expected to miss a key deadline today to begin construction. But developers almost certainly will get an extension from the city of Clearwater.

Last year, the original developer, Tampa entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr. Kiran Patel, changed his plans as the housing market collapsed. Patel formed a partnership with the Related Group, then changed the project from condos to a hotel development with 250 hotel rooms and 200 time shares. Work probably won't start until after summer.

Officials share plans for use of preserve

Pinellas County officials Thursday unveiled their latest plan to clarify and codify exactly how land in the Brooker Creek Preserve can be used.

The plan includes two proposed new land use categories for the preserve. The goal, officials said, is to incorporate the land use changes into the county's comprehensive plan.

Ann Paul of Audubon of Florida, Florida Coastal Island Sanctuaries, was concerned that if the plan were adopted, the public might not have any say on projects like the former plan to water golf courses with preserve water.
