Sheriff rules on issues that held up negotiations
By Times Staff Writer
Published March 8, 2008
NEW PORT RICHEY Sheriff Bob White ruled in favor of his own agency in two impasse issues that have held up contract negotiations with the deputies' union. In a decision issued Friday, White said he would not seek funding from the County Commission for gap insurance - medical coverage for members to span the time between retirement and when Medicare kicks in. White wrote that he would like for Sheriff's Office retirees to have the coverage but budget constraints make it impossible to fund. He also rejected the union's request for more appellate rights in disciplinary matters. White said he should retain final say over demotions of one rank because as an elected official he is accountable for all personnel decisions. The Fraternal Order of Police now has the option to ratify the full contract, with White's latest decisions, or reject it. But any resolution to the yearlong standoff may still be far off. The union has a pending lawsuit that challenges White's authority to decide the two impasse issues. Correction A story in Friday's edition of the Pasco Times incorrectly spelled the name of karate competitor Tony Previte.

GAP insurance was a farce to begn with. The one thing that people cannot say is that ANYONE disciplined by Sheriff White did not deserve it. As a matter of fact most of them deserved far worse than what they got. Pasco deputies deserve nothing

Why is the sheriff the 1 that hears his own decision. Could you imagine everytime people disagreed, that the one with the most power just decides the final outcome of his decision. Who made him GOD. Why no Checks and Balance? Is he hiding something?

I have noticed that you keep putting in that the deputies want GAP. Why don't you write that this is not one of the items mentioned in the contracts. The only area of concern is that of Discipline!!!!

Well it is apparent that the Times wants to post what the Times wants to post. The FOP had pulled GAP from their request. Please state the facts, not what you want readers to believe. The FOP understands there is budget concern this year.
