Rocco Baldelli is giving his legs more recovery time.

ST. PETERSBURG - Rocco Baldelli's health problems have to do with the muscles in his legs, but that's about as specific as he'd get Friday. He's not playing in Rays exhibitions right now to see if the legs feel better with more rest, but he said there has been no setback or new injury, and he remains confident that he will be ready when the regular season starts March31.
"The reason I'm taking these days off is to give my muscles a chance to recover," he said. "I'm thinking getting these extra days will do nothing but help me."
Baldelli reiterated that he doesn't know exactly what the problem is despite extensive tests and visits to multiple specialists. "I've seen more doctors than I have liked, and there's no specific diagnosis that's been found," he said.
Baldelli, whose 2007 season ended in May due to hamstring issues, was vague about his current symptoms, hinting that his legs felt tired but never really saying so. He has played in two games this spring, getting two at-bats each time as the DH (most recently Tuesday). He isn't ready to play today and Sunday is uncertain.
Baldelli, 26, said he is frustrated to be idled - "I don't like not being on the field" - but has "accepted it" as part of the process to keep him healthy for the whole season.
"As of now, I'm not concerned with missing some of these games," he said. "I think this is more us as a group tinkering with days off and how many and seeing what's effective."
Rays officials say that's fine for now, but they will want him to play more later in the spring.
Baldelli said he remains confident he will be in the lineup during the regular season, though it remains to be seen how often. And he seems likely to be limited initially to DH duty, saying only that he expects to be able to play the outfield "at some point."

I stated last year that the problem is his gait Look at pics of him running from the front and you'll see he places all his weight on the arch causing his leg to bend inward This action might not cause the injury directly but overcompensating will.

It's amazing how everyone has an answer to Rocco's problems. Let's hope it isn't more serious than anyone can ever imagine. You're in our prayers, Rocco.

i don't think he's being lazy or trying not to play. i just think he's got a condition that hasn't been identified/resolved.

Maybe some of you should consider the fact that he has a serious health problem. I'm not sure how well you can read between the lines, but all of this mysterious testing seems to indicate something more serious than a muscle problem.

All of you are very inconsiderate. Rocco has a muscle disease. He would like nothing more than to be healthy playing with his team. Give him a break. He's doing all he can.

Don't you people think he would be playing if he could? I think we should be worrying about his health at this point, not whether he can get out and play. Do you folks remember a guy by the name of Ricky Bell by chance?

It's not rocco's fault...he obviously has some kind of degenerative disease. The reason people care is because he he's a great citizen on and off the field, and we was once projected as the next Joe DiMaggio.

Seems like it is a mental problem now. He needs to man up.

Rocco, You might as well just hang your shoes up and call it a career. The reason doctors dont have a diagnosis is because you are a wimp. Id imagine if the Rays traded you to the Red Sox, you would say it was a miracle that the pain went away!

Oh, PULEEZE!! He's had most of a year to rest. Now spring. What good is a roster player who will play every 10th game or so?? That's not a major leaguer. That's a money drain! Put a kid in who wants to play. Think morale, commeraderie, wins.

Since last season Baldelli's injury has taken on a strange "mystery" aspect. It sounds more and more like Rocco is unable to play, period; he needs to leave the game (for now) and focus on his health; 26-year olds shouldn't have tired legs.
