Tax cap petition advances
By Times Staff Writer

A citizen petition that aims to cap property taxes at 1.35 percent of a home's taxable value appears to have cleared its first hurdle to the 2010 ballot. The group behind the plan, Cut Property Taxes Now Inc., said it had enough certified signatures to qualify the measure for a review by the state Supreme Court. About 61,000 were needed for review. The state elections division's Web site Friday showed 73,010 valid signatures. The group says it has more than 150,000 signed petitions but will need many more signatures, plus the court's blessing, to qualify for the ballot. Currently, more than 611,000 petitions are required, though that number will be reset after the November presidential election to reflect 8 percent of that election's qualified voters.
