Two books new in paperback and a fresh cartoon collection take on aspects of the always fascinating subject.

The First Man-Made Man (Bloomsbury) by Pagan Kennedy focuses on two real people who were among the earliest subjects of transgender surgeries almost 60 years ago.

Sex and Sensibility: Ten Women Examine the Lunacy of Modern Love (Twelve), edited by Liza Donnelly, gathers 200 cartoons - whimsical, wry, naughty - about sex in the 21st century by Roz Chast, Signe Wilkinson and other artists.

Virgin: The Untouched History (Bloomsbury) by Hanne Blank is an engaging history of virginity in Western culture: its changing definitions, its role in everything from politics to porn to pop culture, and even its restoration.
