Something artsy for all, from Pottery to paint

Family Day: Enjoy an art-filled afternoon of fun from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the Arts Center, 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. Learn how to make an accordion book or draw comics; see a potter working on her wheel and the Soulful Arts Dancers puppet theater. Enjoy Suzuki violin students perform, and see the entries in the Pinellas County schools' Word and Image program. Free. Call 822-787 or check the Web at www.theartscenter.org.

"Perceptions of Paradise, the Visual Mythology of Florida as Eden": Since the first Europeans arrived in the 16th century, Florida has been viewed as a mythic place, a land of dreams, and an earthly Garden of Eden. Mallory McCane O'Connor, Santa Fe Art Gallery, Santa Fe Community College, explores what role artists have played in perpetuating the image of Florida as a land so beautifully blessed that it seems too good to be true, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, 1101 Country Club Way S, St. Petersburg. Free. Call 893-7326.

Art workshop: A hands-on session by artist John Gibson will introduce working with Chroma's interactive acrylic paints that are able to be re-worked even after the paint is touch dry, 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Don Vista Cultural Arts Center, 3300 Pass-a-Grille Way, St. Pete Beach. All paints and media are provided, but attendees are asked to bring brushes, surfaces and water bases. Free, but space is limited. Call 363-2144 to reserve a spot.
