Attention all Largo motorists: One of the city's busiest intersections will be closed next weekend.

From 9 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Monday, March 17, the intersection of Ulmerton Road and 66th Street will be closed to all traffic.

Kris Carson, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Transportation, said the shutdown is necessary to give construction crews an opportunity to raise the intersection by a foot. The move will improve drainage at the bustling interchange, Carson said.

Here are the suggested detours:

Eastbound Ulmerton:Ulmerton Road to Belcher Road to East Bay Drive to U.S. 19 to Ulmerton.

Westbound Ulmerton: Ulmerton Road to East Bay Drive to Belcher Road to Ulmerton.

Northbound 66th: 66th to Bryan Dairy Road to Belcher Road to East Bay Drive to 66th.

Southbound 66th/U.S. 19: Stay on U.S. 19 to Bryan Dairy to 66th.

The closure is part of the project to widen Ulmerton from four lanes to six between El Centro/Ranchero Road and U.S. 19.

Construction began in 2007 and is expected to be completed by spring 2009, Carson said. The $10-million project will also include new sidewalks and drainage for the busy thoroughfare.

Suggested detours

- Eastbound Ulmerton: Ulmerton to Belcher Rd. to East Bay Drive to U.S. 19 to Ulmerton.

- Westbound Ulmerton: Ulmerton Rd. to East Bay Drive to Belcher Rd. to Ulmerton.

- Northbound 66th: 66th to Bryan Dairy Rd. to Belcher Rd. to East Bay Drive to 66th.

- Southbound 66th/U.S. 19: Stay on U.S. 19 to Bryan Dairy to 66th.

Why not simplify matters by showing a map of the area? You are not telling people which direction to turn on the detours. Get some directions from Map Quest. A new person in the area would be completely confused by those detour directions.
