Globespotting: Varanasi, India
By Robert Maietta, Special to the Times
Published March 9, 2008
I took this photograph shortly after sunrise from a small boat on the Ganges River in Varanasi, India. The scene is typical of this holy city - the seat of the Hindu religion - and beautifully depicts Hindu pilgrims who travel from all over the continent to come to the Ganges, where bathing in the sacred waters is believed to absolve sins and lead to salvation. The frenetic activity and riot of color, sound and smell I experienced in this holy place were unique and well-captured for me in this photograph. I truly felt privileged to be there.
