Goalie's gaffes sink Lightning
Two misplays by the normally reliable Mike Smith lead to goals, including the late winner.

The puck trickles into the net before the Lightning's Paul Ranger, left, or Ron Hainsley can get to it for the winning goal. It came after goalie Mike Smith fumbled the puck behind the net.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Mike Smith promises one bad game will not change his playing style.
The Lightning goaltender said he still will be aggressive handling the puck and try to create offense by helping spark the transition.
But after Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena, in which two Smith misplays led to goals, including Jason Chimera's winner with 3:44 left, Smith knows he has to be more careful.
"The best thing a goalie wants is to get back in there after a game in which he didn't play well and put it in the past," Smith said. "It's over now. You can't do anything about it. You move on and get better for the next game and learn from it."
Though coach John Tortorella said the Lightning "played hard" and "defended well," there was much to dislike about the 10th loss in 11 games and, at 26-35-8, its continued dive to the bottom of the league.
Vinny Lecavalier scored his 33rd goal and first in 13 games on a penalty shot. But he had several more giveaways than the two for which he was credited and was minus-3. Marty St. Louis scored his 22nd goal and first in 11 games. But he also was minus-3 and had one shot.
The irony was the linemates scored after being broken up.
The power play was 0-for-7, including a failure on a four-minute advantage. And Chimera's goal came on a Columbus power play that was on an 0-for-34 streak and began when Jeff Halpern was caught holding, barely, in the offensive zone.
Then there was Smith, who since being acquired from the Stars in the Brad Richards deal has dazzled with puck and passing skills that have quickened the transition.
But his backhand pass along the back boards to defenseman Paul Ranger was intercepted by Dan Fritsche and led to Derek MacKenzie's first NHL goal that gave Columbus a 2-1 lead with 42 seconds left in the first period.
Smith fumbled the puck behind the net to begin a sequence that ended with Chimera's winner that dribbled through Smith's legs.
"We knew with our forecheck, if we could get on him, there might be turnovers," said MacKenzie, who played two junior seasons with Smith.
Halpern, who came with Smith in the Richards deal, said he never before saw his teammate give up a goal after leaving the net, and he praised the Blue Jackets for "taking the boards away.
"But as forwards," he added, "we didn't do a good enough job getting into spots to bypass those guys. We have to present ourselves better, too."
A noble fall on the sword, but Smith can't be careless.
"As much as I come out and handle it, it's going to happen once in a while," he said of giveaways. "They did a really good job of taking options away, and they made me hang onto it a little longer and not make a decisive decision.
"Obviously a couple of goals went in that shouldn't have and that's the difference between winning and losing. You can't let in bad goals in this league and expect to win."

Sandy, I 3rd your idea. If I didn't have season tks, I wouldnt go this Sat. Our stars are playing uselessly but glad to cash their paychecks. Disgusting. Coaching is horrible - nets are missed wide constantly. What the h--l is going on here??

Except for the young guys, the guys trying to win a job next year, everyone has given up. There is absolutely NO emotion being displayed by most of the players. Case in point: when Marty and V4 scored Sunday, neither cracked a smile or showed emotion

Sandy - I second your idea. That's the only way to really show your displeasure. I hope it happens.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but when we shoot the puck at their net. There is nobody to get rebounds at all. There is not one player crashing the net and often.Occasionally, shoot at the net all the time. What do you have to lose?

Listening to Feaster's comments on Scilio's show the past couple of weeks, he knows he is gone, and the ownership group is going to clean house...Even Phil might go, which would be a shame. I believe he is too honest for the new guys to keep him.

Who is coaching these guys? Nobody? Management and coaching staff need to GO. It makes me ill to spend good money to go to these games and the home team doesn't show up!

OK sportsfans, there's only one way to send a message to the boys, coach and management and that is to stop going to the games. What a waste of three hours anyway when everyone has given up. It is all about money so let's hit them where it hurts.

Never take the man, let guys skate right past them at the blue line. High school teams play better D. Then management let's Smith wear his Dallas helmet. Joke

I don't think it's from a lack of effort. We have been close the last few games. You have to help your goaltender out. You do that by getting some offensive firepower.Which Prospal and Richards helped provide. We need some scoring to replace them.

As much as it pains me to say this the last 15 games are an early training camp. Just a way to look at the new guys and see what holes need to be filled (and there's a few). A dynamic, scoring center to replace richy should be first on the list.

Five shots in the 3rd period, 0 for 7 on the power play, giveaways (including those by the goalie), inept passing. What more could be said? Wish we still had Rammer as the power play and defense coach. Maybe someone who can score (like Prospal).

This is the worst passing in the league. #4 has phoned it home. Still giving goals in the third. 18 games lost after tied or leading after two perios now?

And my over/under of 5 wins in the last 20 games continues.. We are still at 1. For us to battle back and tie the game only to lose again just cuts deeper into the heart.. This season cannot end soon enough !!!

Another game without emotion, never have I witnessed a more gutless Bolt team. Maybe Andre Roy had it right, show some emotion for Gods sake the last month of the season. If not for your self, but for the next coach & GM.

From the very first game the major malfunction of this team is their inability to pass the puck crisp and clean. How in the hell do you get to this level without good passing skills? This is the problem you have to correct in order to move foward.

This team continues to play like they have sleeping pills in their water bottles. I have watched all season and I can tell the difference from the beginning of the season till now. Most of these players have just given up and it disgusts me.
