Gas mask forces an evacuation

Three apartment buildings were evacuated Monday morning after police were called about a suspicious item. The object, which turned out to be a filter from an old-fashioned gas mask, was found in the parking lot of the Fountain Square apartments at 1799 N Highland Ave. Clearwater police spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts said the department received the call at 9:14 a.m. One or two members of the bomb squad were sent out and determined the object didn't pose a threat. By 11 a.m. the residents were allowed to return to their apartments.
