Robert J. Haiman, senior fellow of the Freedom Forum in Washington, D.C., will present Why Can't the Press be Fair at 4 p.m. today at Lewis House. Haiman retired as president of the Poynter Institute in 1996 and is president emeritus, Distinguished Editor in Residence and a senior trustee. He worked at the St. Petersburg Times for 25 years as a reporter and an editor. This is part of the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College Public Forum Series.

Gary L. Simpson of the National Center for Genome Resources in Santa Fe, N.M., will speak on The Wild, Wild World of Emerging Infectious Diseases at 7 p.m. today at Fox Hall. Simpson was trained in internal medicine at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and in infectious diseases at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, and the Stanford University Medical Center. He has graduate degrees from the University of Illinois, Balliol College at Oxford University and the Harvard School of Public Health, and has more than 20 years' experience in academic medicine, infectious diseases, and public health.

Eckerd College Search and Rescue (EC-SAR) will hold the 22nd annual Marine Yard Sale from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Eckerd College Waterfront. Used boats, motors, electronics and various other marine equipment will be for sale at discounted rates. There will be a raffle and refreshments for sale. All proceeds will benefit EC-SAR, a group of trained volunteer students and alumni who provide maritime search and rescue to the Tampa Bay boating community. Call 864-8555 for information.

Pianist Cory Hall will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Music Center. The program will include compositions by 19th and 20th century virtuosos Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Erwin Schulhoff and Zez Confrey; and ragtime and jazz-inspired works, including Kitten on the Keys by Confrey.
