Shorecrest's Brent Rasmussen singled home Robby Thigpen with two outs in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday to lift the Chargers to a 6-5 extra-inning victory at home against St. Stephen's.
Thigpen led off the ninth with a base hit for Shorecrest (6-5) and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before Rasmussen's single to left centerfield plated the game-winning run.
Shorecrest trailed 5-1 in the sixth before tying the game to force extra innings. Chris Kinter doubled to bring home two runs and Rasmussen and Marc Brakeman each singled home a run in the sixth.
Kinter (2-0) pitched three innings in relief to pick up the victory. Jeff Reynolds started for Shorecrest and went six strong innings.
Northside Chr. 15,
Keswick Chr. 5
Ryan McDonald hit two home runs in Northside's six-inning victory on the road.
McDonald hit a two-run shot in the third and followed with another two-run homer in the fifth for Northside (7-4). Cam Eller stroked two doubles and JoJo Hess went 5-for-5 with a double.
Keswick drops to 0-7.
Canterbury 7,
Bradenton Chr. 2
Two home runs were all the offense Canterbury needed in a road victory.
John Lancaster hit a grand slam with one out in the third to give the Crusaders (9-1) a 5-0 lead.
Mitchell Todd added a two-run shot in the fourth inning to extend Canterbury's lead to 7-0.
CCC 12, Berkeley Prep 5
Garret Loop's grand slam in the second ignited a six-run inning for the Marauders in their road victory.
James Dowdell added a three-run home run in the third to give the Marauders an 11-0 lead.
Joe McLemore started for CCC (11-1) and pitched 41/3innings to get his first victory of the season.
SOFTBALL
Canterbury 3,
Bradenton Chr. 0
Timely hitting combined with strong pitching performances from Emily Winesett and Krissy Longstreet led to a shutout victory for Canterbury on the road.
Jennifer Crosthwaite scored Canterbury's first run in the second when she led off with a single and scored on Winesett's groundout.
Macey Hall tripled in the third to score Haleigh Reddick and increase the Crusaders' lead to 2-0. Canterbury (12-1) added a run in the seventh when Chelsea Weiland tripled in her first at-bat and Hall singled her home.
Winesett (4-0) pitched five shutout innings before giving way to Longstreet, who earned her first save of the season.
Tampa Prep 6, IRC 1
Tampa Prep completed a regular-season sweep of Indian Rocks Christian with a win on the road.
"We seem to have a meltdown where we commit two or three errors and it opens the floodgates," IRC coach Phil Farver said.
Tuesday, that meltdown was in the fourth. Four IRC errors led to two Tampa Prep runs, turning a 3-1 game into an insurmountable 5-1 deficit for the Golden Eagles (0-10).
"We've improved each game," said Farver, noting his team lost 10-0 in five innings the first time they played the Terrapins. "We're young and we're taking our lumps. But if we keep improving, by the time districts roll around it should be a competitive tournament."
Northside Chr. 10,
St. Stephen's 6
Northside gave up more than three runs for the first time all season, but its offense more than compensated in a victory on the road.
Kayla Turner had three RBIs for Northside (9-1) and went 3-for-4. Stephanie Bonalewicz was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Jessica Anderson was 3-for-5 with a double and Katheryn Brown went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Northside.
