  • BRIAN, WESLEY, 78, of Lecanto, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Friday (Jan. 5, 2001) at Seven Rivers Community Hospital, Crystal River. Born in Detroit, he moved to Lecanto eight months ago from St. Petersburg and was self-employed. He was Protestant. Survivors include a son, Bert, Canton, Mich.; a stepson, Michael Stargell, Mobile, Ala.; a daughter, Linda Ritter, Detroit; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.   • BROWN, JUANITA B., 86, of Inverness, died Sunday (Jan. 7, 2001) at Citrus Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Lincoln, Neb., he came here 17 years ago from Fort Collins, Colo., where he was a retired cattle rancher. He was a member of the Marine Corps Auxiliary, Crystal River. He retired from the Air Force and was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.   • McALLISTER, JOSEPH WILLIAM, 81, of Winter Haven, formerly of Tampa, died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) at home. He grew up in Tampa and lived in Winter Haven for 48 years. Before retiring in 1981, he was the officer in charge of the processed fruit and vegetable division of the USDA in Winter Haven. He was former president of the Florida Section of the Institute of Food Technology and a member of the Food Officials of the South. He served during World War II as a first lieutenant in the chemical warfare division of the Army on Guam. He was active in Boy Scouting for nearly 40 years and was associated with Troop 121 of First Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven, where he served as scout master from 1968 to 1976. He was a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow of the Boy Scouts of America, an honorary lifetime scouting member organization to which members are elected by other scouts in recognition of their involvement. He was a member of Lake Region Sportman's Club, American Legion Post No. 8 and the VFW of Winter Haven. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Kathryn; a daughter, Linda Jo McAllister, Valrico; a son, Brian William, Auburn, Ala.; and three grandchildren. Crisp-Coon Funeral Homes, Winter Haven.
  • McRAY, MELVIN, 59, of Tampa, died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) in Tampa. Born in Sanford, he came here in 1981 from New York. He was a retired salesman from Sears, Roebuck and Co. He helped several youths become involved with the Urban Junior Golf Program at Rogers Park, was a member of Bible Based Fellowship Church of Temple Terrace, where he served as chairman of the deacon's ministry, and was an active participant for the Men Only Ministry, Prayer Ministry, Couples Ministry and Mission and Outreach Ministry. He served dinners at Metropolitan Ministries, and bagged groceries for the needy. He was a farmer, an Army major in World World II with OSS, a member of Ruskin VFW Memorial Post No. 6287 and Scottish Rites, a 32nd Degree Mason and an Amateur Radio Operator, Brandon Chapter. He was past president of F.F.V.A., was a member of Ruskin Tomato Growers Association and was a Hillsborough County Park board chairman for 32 years, having a park dedicated in his honor. He was inducted into the Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame and received the Hillsborough County Fair Harvest Award for lifetime achievement, and he was a member of Gibsonton United Methodist Church.     • STEINMAN, CHRISTINE R. BARNES, of Gulfport, formerly of Cincinnati, died Sunday (Jan. 7, 2001) at home. Born in Bryan, Ky., she was a seasonal resident here since 1978. She was a 1938 graduate of Hughes High School and in 1939 became the first nurse's aid at Good Samaritan Hospital, both in Cincinnati. She attended Good Samaritan Nursing School and Mount St. Joseph College, both in Cincinnati, and became a registered nurse in 1942. She was a nurse at Wright Aeronautical Co. from 1942 to 1945, and was a plant nurse at William Powell Co. from 1946 to 1960. She was a member of Clover Nook Christian Church, Cincinnati, and the Alumni Association of Good Samaritan Hospital. She was a past president of the Industrial Nursing Association and a past vice president of the Wyoming Garden Club. She was a member of Pasadena Yacht and Country Club. She was an avid horseback rider and ice skater. He was a retired Air Force colonel, serving as postmaster general of the Air Force at the time of his retirement.
