KEY WEST -- Day 4 of Yachting Key West Race Week brought another day of difficult sailing conditions with major wind shifts and predominantly light breezes as the five-day international regatta heads for a conclusion.
Weather improves, so does the fishing
This week we have seen a great improvement in our weather. Because of this warming trend, the Gulf of Mexico has been producing some nice catches of grouper. Larry Jeisey and son Rich fished with me south of Egmont Channel in 55 feet of water over cheese-rock hard bottom and caught 15 gag grouper. Four pushed 16 pounds. We fished south because the water temperature was 5 degrees warmer. The grouper and mangrove snapper seemed to be concentrated in the warmer waters.
