Bats spring to life in Devil Rays rout
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- This was the game for which the Devil Rays had been waiting.

  • Naimoli: Rays in Yanks' shadow
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- There have been many theories espoused about why the Devil Rays have not drawn more fans: the design and/or location of the stadium, the price of tickets and concessions, the team's lack of success, limited baseball interest in the Tampa Bay area.
  • Eiland, Rothschild seek to stay course
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Dave Eiland, from what we can tell, was joking.

Softball districts

  • Crosby fires Keswick Christian to A-11 title
SEMINOLE -- Keswick Christian used a balance of good pitching, defense and timely hitting to defeat Shorecrest 6-0 Friday afternoon in the Class A, District 11 final. The Crusaders (16-5) will host a regional game Tuesday. Shorecrest (8-14) will travel for its regional game.
  • Weiss blanks Gators, Eagles win 5A-10 title
NEW PORT RICHEY -- As if pitching in the Class 5A, District 10 championship game wasn't motivation enough, East Lake sophomore Julia Weiss had extra incentive to throw well against Land O'Lakes on Friday.
  • Seminole Presbyterian pounds way to title
TAMPA -- Seminole Presbyterian won the Class A, District 10 softball in -- and this phrase is not to be taken lightly -- overwhelming fashion.
  • Cougars power past Warhawks
SEMINOLE -- One wanted revenge. The other seeked to justify its district title snagged a season earlier.
  • Eagles' Weiss blanks Gators
NEW PORT RICHEY -- As if pitching in the Class 5A, District 10 championship game wasn't motivation enough, East Lake sophomore Julia Weiss had extra incentive to throw well against Land O'Lakes on Friday.
  • Crystal River settles for second place
LECANTO -- Crystal River's quest for its first district title since 1997 will have to wait for another year.

Baseball districts

  • Seminole thumps St. Petersburg for title
CLEARWATER -- The offensive train that is Seminole baseball was in full swing Friday night and it proved too much for St. Petersburg in the Class 5A District 11 championship game as the Warhawks rolled over the Green Devils 10-1 behind a solid pitching performance from John Killalea.
  • Mistakes cost Hurricanes a crown
INVERNESS -- Facing the sixth-best Class 3A team in the state, the charge for the Citrus baseball team was to play stellar defense and hope that its recently silent bats might come alive.
  • Baisley act helps Gators repeat in Class 5A-10
NEW PORT RICHEY -- Cal Baisley said there is no family rule mandating his twin sons watch each other's back, but you'd have a hard time convincing some of those watching Friday's district final at Rudy Snyder Field.
  • Dunedin cruises to 4A-10 title
DUNEDIN -- Dunedin coach Tom Hilbert called it a "solid game".
  • Zephyrhills battles back
ZEPHYRHILLS -- A pair of two-run homers surrendered by Zephyrhills pitcher Graham Taylor surely worried some fans at John F. Clements Field on Friday night, but not coach Bruce Cimorelli.
  • All together now: Lancers win
TAMPA -- Practice together. Pray together. Play together.
  • Early outburst gives Sharks 4A-11 title
BRADENTON -- Riverview used an eight-run first inning to stop Bradenton Bayshore 12-9 Friday night and win the Class 4A, District 11 championship at Ed Smith Stadium.
  • Gators repeat in Class 5A-10
NEW PORT RICHEY -- Cal Baisley said there is no family rule mandating his twin sons watch each other's back, but you'd have a hard time convincing some of those watching Friday's district final at Rudy Snyder Field.

Track districts

  • Jenkins' kick propels Falcons
TAMPA -- Taking advantage of the last race of the evening, Leto 4x400 anchorman Mike Jenkins found an extra gear, passed two other runners and finished first, lifting the Falcons to a three-point victory in the Class 3A, District 8 track meet at Wharton.
  • Brothers sweep A-3 discus
BRADENTON -- Other than a third-place finish for Berkeley Prep's boys, Hillsborough's teams didn't fare well Thursday in the Class A, District 3 meet. But Tampa Baptist's Marqus Johnson and his brother, Garrett Johnson, finished 1-2 in the discus, with throws of 169 feet, 3 inches and 151-9, respectively.
  • Springstead boys gain district title, revenge
PALM HARBOR -- If there was an extra bounce in his step Friday, an extra burst of speed between hurdles, an extra bit of resolve deep down inside Springstead's Alton Hughes, it can all be summed up in one word:
  • PHU girls race to third; Dunedin boys fourth
PALM HARBOR -- Host Palm Harbor University's girls team took third and Dunedin's boys team finished fourth at Friday's Class 3A, District 9 meet at Palm Harbor U. Stadium.
