Workers from David Nelson Construction of Palm Harbor pull as an 80-ton crane lifts a 207-foot-long pedestrian overpass into place across Park Street at Tyrone Boulevard in St. Petersburg. The bridge is part of a new section, nearly a half-mile long, of the Pinellas Trail. Park Street was closed to traffic for a week but reopened Friday.

ST. PETERSBURG -- In a closely watched experiment for the Tampa Bay area and Florida, a private, non-profit group is preparing to take over the government's traditional job of looking out for vulnerable children who have suffered abuse and neglect.

Lakewood High student dies a week after accident
ST. PETERSBURG -- A 16-year-old Lakewood High School sophomore died Thursday at Bayfront Medical Center, a week after suffering a head injury in an automobile accident, authorities said.
