One bit of good that came out of the Genoa summit was the cooperative spirit between Vladimir V. Putin and George W. Bush, from which they both can benefit.
Brady Law works as it is
As Bert Lance used to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The Brady Law background check system for handgun purchases isn't broken. To the contrary, it has stopped gun purchases by 600,000 lawbreakers. So why does Attorney General John Ashcroft want to weaken the law? The obvious answer is that he was doing the bidding of the National Rifle Association, giving the gun lobby what it failed to win in court.

Taking jobs, alienating customers
For weeks Americans have been told that the outsourcing of high-tech jobs is good for our economy. So said Greg Mankiw, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers in a recent report signed by President Bush. So, too, writes Thomas Friedman of the New York Times in articles praising the rise of call centers in India used for everything from making airline reservations and reading medical X-ray films to providing tech support for American computer firms.

Soft money is back, and it's making hypocrites of all those Democrats who fervently championed the McCain-Feingold campaign reform law, not to mention those Republicans who objected to the law's restrictions on issue advocacy.
