Commissioners won't seek raise
CLEARWATER -- City commissioners are poised to deny themselves a pay raise during their meeting tonight. Commissioner J.B. Johnson suggested earlier this year that the subject of raises be debated. But Mayor Brian Aungst said Wednesday that he wants the issue tabled indefinitely, suggesting the summer of 2000 just isn't "a good time" to discuss raises. Aungst declined to comment further. Commissioner Ed Hart said he thinks the city has other budget priorities and a raise would look self-serving. "At this time, I understand our salaries are pretty comparable to other cities, so there's no reason for us to jump up," Hart said, citing a recent city salary survey of similar size Florida towns. Commissioner Ed Hooper said he wouldn't support a raise and noted that commissioners' salaries were raised 50 percent in 1996, from $10,000 to $15,000 per year. But Johnson had suggested that another raise of undefined size should be considered to attract better candidates to run for office.
