Scores on ACT hit plateau GLACCUM, MARION P., 80, of Beverly Hills, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000). Born in Jersey City, N.J., she came here nine years ago from Freehold, N.J. She was a secretary for Best Foods, Jersey City, for more than 20 years, and was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Beverly Hills. There are no known survivors. TRUAN, CLYDE FRANKLIN JR., 75, of Lecanto, died Monday (Aug. 14, 2000). Born in Knoxville, Tenn., he came here 35 years ago from Atlanta. He was a retired lieutenant for the Strongsville Police Department (Badge 22), Strongsville, Ohio, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Strongsville Masonic Lodge 728 F&AM, Scottish Rite, Ohio, Yaarab Temple Shrine, Atlanta, Citrus Shrine CLub, American Legion 400, Inverness, Blue Knight International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club and Clydes Auto Bowling League, Crystal River. DAVIS, LOU IVEY "GRANDMA," 80, of Brooksville, formerly of Tampa, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at home. Born in Tarpon Springs, she came here eight years ago from Tampa, where she lived for 22 years. She was a welder for Tampa Ship Yards and during World War II and the Korean War, she was a certified Air Force welder. She was Methodist and a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Lodge 0807, Tampa. Survivors include four sons, Steven A., Brooksville, Garland Ivey, Tampa, Bert R., Boca Raton, and Kenny Apfel, New Port Richey; four daughters, Frances L. PITTMAN, MARY S., 87, of Spring Hill, formerly of Port Richey, died Monday (Aug. 14, 2000) at home. Born in Detroit, she came here 14 years ago from Port Richey. ADORNO, MARIA, 76, of Dade City, formerly of Tampa, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Heritage Park Specialty Care Center, Dade City. Born in San Tuce, Puerto Rico, she moved to Dade City two years ago from Tampa. She was a homemaker and member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Kingston, N.Y. Survivors include a son, Raymon, Dade City; three daughters, Elizabeth Adorno, Dade City, Margaret Garcia, Tampa, and Carmen Adorno, Kingston; a sister, Olga Miranda, Tampa; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. APLIN, HENRY R., 88, of Lutz, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at University Community Hospital. Born in De Funiak Springs, he came here in 1931. He was a trim carpenter and was a member of Carpenter's Hall Local No. 696. He was Baptist. He belonged to the A.A.O.P.A. and was Christian. RINGELSPAUGH, DONALD "DON," 89, of Tampa, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000). Born in Sydney, Ohio, he came here in 49 years ago. He was a well-known artist by trade in the area for 51 years. He designed the Kapok Tree Inn restaurants as well as many private homes. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, the International Brotherhood of Painters, and was Brethren. Born in Kiev, Russia, he came here 20 years ago from Milwaukee and was an editorial writer for the Milwaukee Journal. Born in Bristol, Va., she came to Hudson 27 years ago from Kingsport, Va., and moved to Tarpon Springs two years ago. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the Forest Hill Civic Association, both in Holiday, and a 30 year member of the St. Finbar Rosary Society, Brooklyn. NORRIS, MILLARD VANCE, 95, of New Port Richey, died Wednesday (Aug. 16, 2000). Born in Benson, N.C., he came here 33 years ago from Arlington, Va. He was a dispatcher for American Oil Co. with 29 years of service and was the liaison to the Ambassador of Pakistan in 1970. He was a member and deacon of Maximo Presbyterian Church, St. Petersburg, the Masonic Lodge 11, Arlington, and member of the Grand Order of Odd Fellows. He was an Army and Coast Guard veteran. He was a retired New York state employee and an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. STEBBINS, BETTY J., 77, of New Port Richey, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. Born in Cedar Springs, Mich., she came here 28 years ago from Sheridan, Mich., and was co-owner of Stebbins Funeral Home, Sheridan and Stanton, Mich. She was a member of Community Congregational Church, New Port Richey, and a volunteer at the Hernando-Pasco Hospice and the North Bay Medical Center. BARRENTINE, STACEY S., 68, of Clearwater, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor. He was born in St. Augustine and came here in 1972 from England. He worked as a salesman for a welding-supply company after he retired from the Air Force with the rank of master sergeant. He was a veteran of the Korean and the Vietnam Wars. He was Baptist, a Mason and a member of the VFW and the Air Force Sergeants Association. Survivors include his wife, Helga; two sons, Stacey II, Palm Harbor, and Joe, Dunedin; a daughter, Nellie Ruark, North Lauderdale; his mother, Sarah Barrentine, and a sister, Bettye Hooker, both of Hornell, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. CRABLE, ALVIN L. JR., 80, of Clearwater, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at Largo Medical Center. He was born in Sherman, Texas, and came here in 1990 from Tulsa, Okla., where he retired after 12 years as the human resources director for Albert Equipment Co. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He graduated with a masters degree from Oklahoma State University. - FLYNN, DR. JAMES H. SR., 93, of Verona, N.J., a former seasonal resident of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at Greenville Retirement Center in West Orange, N.J. Born in Paterson, N.J., he maintained a home in St. Petersburg from 1976 to 1990. He was a podiatrist in private practice for 40 years, retiring in 1972. He was a 1929 graduate of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. He was the 1947 U.S. individual saber champion and was a member of the 1948 U.S. Olympic Fencing Team and bronze medal saber team and was the 1950 and 1951 U.S. national saber team champion. He was an international official at the 1946 Olympic Games in Japan, at the Central American Games in Guatemala and Venezuela and at the World Fencing Championships in Philadelphia. He served several terms as chairman of the New Jersey Division of Amateur Fencers League of America. He was a life member of the U.S. Fencing Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association. Through the 1950s and 1960s, he organized the Verona Recreation Department's fencing club and taught fencing at the Adirondack Southern School, St. Petersburg. He was an air raid warden in Verona during World War II and was a member of the New York Athletic Club, Boy Scouts of America, the Verona Senior Citizens and the Old Guard of Caldwell. He also was a member of the St. Petersburg Shuffle Board Club, the Fencing Club at Lake Maggiore Rod and Gun Club and was an avid bowler and tennis player well into his 80s. - RAY, B. BARRY, 72, of Pinellas Park, died Monday (Aug. 14, 2000) at Hospice House Woodside, Pinellas Park. Born in Baltimore, he came to Florida in 1987 from Arnold, Md. He was the owner of Kennedy Stationery Co., Baltimore, and was Catholic. Survivors include two brothers, B.J. - RIDHOLLS, ALMA E., 93, of the Mainlands, Pinellas Park, died Monday (Aug. 14, 2000) at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute. She came here in 1971 from her native Cleveland. - BLAIR, EDNA R., 93, of St. Petersburg, formerly of Tampa, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000). Born in Michigan City, Ind., she moved to Tampa in 1946 and to St. Petersburg in 1993. She was a homemaker. - BRONIKOWSKI, LEONARD J., 83, of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at St. Anthony's Hospital of Parkinson's disease. Born in Duluth, Minn., he came here in 1962 from Tower, Minn. He retired after 10 years as a maintenance man for St. Anthony's Hospital. He was a Cub Scout leader, a member of the American Legion and a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, where he was an usher. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. - DAVIS, KEITH A., 82, of Indianapolis, a seasonal resident of St. Petersburg, died Monday (Aug. 14, 2000) at Windsor Place of Carmel, Carmel, Ind. He was a seasonal resident of St. Petersburg since 1987. He retired after 25 years as a purchasing engineer for the Allison Division of General Motors Corp. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member and elder of Northminster Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis, and Pass-A-Grille Community Church, St. Petersburg, and also of Mystic Tie Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shrine, the John Purdue Club and the Scientech Club. He was a 1939 graduate of Purdue University. - FLYNN, DR. JAMES H. SR., 93, of Verona, N.J., a former seasonal resident of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at Greenville Retirement Center in West Orange, N.J. Born in Paterson, N.J., he maintained a home in St. Petersburg from 1976 to 1990. He was a podiatrist in private practice for 40 years, retiring in 1972. He was a 1929 graduate of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. He was the 1947 U.S. individual saber champion and was a member of the 1948 U.S. Olympic Fencing Team and bronze medal saber team and was the 1950 and 1951 U.S. national saber team champion. He was an international official at the 1946 Olympic Games in Japan, at the Central American Games in Guatemala and Venezuela and at the World Fencing Championships in Philadelphia. He served several terms as chairman of the New Jersey Division of Amateur Fencers League of America. He was a life member of the U.S. Fencing Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association. Through the 1950s and 1960s, he organized the Verona Recreation Department's fencing club and taught fencing at the Adirondack Southern School, St. Petersburg. He was an air raid warden in Verona during World War II and was a member of the New York Athletic Club, Boy Scouts of America, the Verona Senior Citizens and the Old Guard of Caldwell. He also was a member of the St. Petersburg Shuffle Board Club, the Fencing Club at Lake Maggiore Rod and Gun Club and was an avid bowler and tennis player well into his 80s. - GATES, LEO PAUL, 45, of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., he came here in 1990 from Texas. He was an automobile mechanic. - HEIKES, JULIA A., 89, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000) at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute. Born in Morrow, Ohio, she came here in 1985 from Great Falls, Mont. She retired from Sears in Great Falls after 20 years as an accountant. - HELMANTOLER, ERVIN L., 90, of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000). He was born in Metropolis, Ill., and came here in 1976 from Harvey, Ill. He was a farmer and retired from the maintenance department at Atlantic Richfield. Locally, he was a member of Cornerstone Free Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II. She owned a delicatessen and enjoyed the beach and walking.
