The Lecanto school buses nine students to the pool in the morning and 14 in the afternoon for the classes, giving the emotionally and developmentally disabled students an opportunity to cool off while learning at the same time. Editor's note: This a new addition to Top of the Class to recognize success stories from Citrus County schools. I welcome submissions from parents, former teachers or administrators. Reduced-price meals available
Parents must fill out an application each year for their children to receive free or reduced price meals. The status of free- or reduced-meal applications on file for the 2000-2001 school year will expire Sept. 26. Once an application expires, a child will be required to pay full price for meals until a new application is approved. For information or assistance completing the form, call 726-1931, ext. 2451.

COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES REPRESENTATIVE: Gov. Jeb Bush has appointed Robert O. Hastings to the Central Florida Community College Board of Trustees as a representative from Levy County. He replaces Penny Lofton, whose term expired in May. Hastings has worked for the Levy County School Board since 1981. Currently, he is the principal of Chiefland High School, having served previously as principal at Williston High School for four years and principal at Cedar Key School for six years. He also served as administrator for Bronson Middle School and taught at Chiefland and Bronson high schools. A graduate of Manatee High School in Bradenton, Hastings earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Middle Tennessee State University and a master's degree in administration and supervision from Nova Southeastern University.

AUGUST NIGHTS: Three Crystal River High School alumni -- Brendalee (Beardsley) Combrink of Nature Coast Trading Co., Beth (Carter) Yant and Jerry Yant of Nature Coast Electric -- organized an event that provides an opportunity for the 249 Crystal River High School seniors to compete in a scholarship program. The fundraising event is called Hot August Nights 2001 and will be from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Nature Coast Trading Co. in the Crystal Square Shopping Center on U.S. 19.
Council to DOT: Fix intersection
