The Bucs finish preseason 1-3 after a 36-7 loss to the Falcons that doesn't inspire much confidence.

    Gary Shelton
Progress with Brad? Still not sure
ATLANTA -- Perhaps you are an optimist. Perhaps you are replaying his touchdown pass over and over in your mind. Perhaps you are ready for the regular season to begin tomorrow.

UCF still seeks attention as Clemson looms
    Forget Alabama.

Jeff Bowden within shouting distance of dad
DURHAM, N.C. -- As usual, Jeff Bowden and Bobby Bowden will stand within earshot of each other on the Florida State sideline during tonight's season opener against Duke. As usual, Jeff will have a headset, dreading if his father reaches for it.

    Suspensions alter Pruett's happy return
GAINESVILLE -- This was supposed to be the joyful return of Marshall coach Bobby Pruett, the former Florida defensive coordinator who left in 1996 after two seasons and went on to lead the Thundering Herd to unprecedented success.

    Taliaferro to get big entrance
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Whether he walks, jogs or runs does not matter. Adam Taliaferro will lead Penn State onto the Beaver Stadium field tonight in some way, still to be determined. It will be more meaningful than any tackle or touchdown.

Pretenders rare in this victory lane
A look at the list of Darlington winners reveals that nearly all are among NASCAR's all-time greats.

    Outdoors
    Daily fishing report
With water temperatures between 80 and 90, I find many fishermen moving to deep, cooler water in search of bass. This is logical during a typical summer. This year logic is not working. I am finding good concentrations of bass in 4 to 6 feet of water. The reason these fish are shallow is the weather. Lake levels in May and June were very low. The heavy rains in July filled the lakes and cooled them. This brought life to the shallow water.

    Preps
Contenders have fast shoes to fill
Mitchell's Danny Sheehan is the favorite to emerge as the county's top runner this season, but several others are ready to fight for that honor.
