A trained force of 300 students helps a police officer keep the peace at Walker Middle School. The students wear the emblems of the Youth Crime Watch: an orange shoulder belt and a badge. They carry a walkie-talkie to report emergencies. But they are not treated as snitches. It's cool to be a crime watcher at Walker.

GREAT ESCAPE TO DEVIL'S MILLHOPPER: Explore Devil's Millhopper, a huge sinkhole in Gainesville. It formed when an underground cavern collapsed, allowing small streams to tumble down the slopes and pave the way for lush plant growth. See plants and animals in the sinkhole that are found in the Appalachian Mountains. Bring plenty of water along with a sack lunch. You may also want to wear comfortable walking shoes. The program is designed for adults and children age 8 and older accompanied by an adult.

Barriers to illegal turns to toughen
Diverters meant to halt turns from Dale Mabry onto Berger and Little roads are no match for determined drivers, so the county will try again.

Citrus Pointe Drive traffic to be discussed
CITRUS PARK -- Slowing traffic on Citrus Pointe Drive from Gunn Highway to the Sheldon Road intersection will be discussed at a county meeting Sept. 17. The meeting is part of the county's Residential Traffic Control program, established to provide solutions for traffic and speeding problems along residential roads. A possible solution would be installation of speed humps on Citrus Pointe. A recommendation to Hillsborough County commissioners will be based on information gathered from this meeting, to be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Citrus Park Elementary School cafeteria, 7700 Gunn Highway.

The former Maniscalco Elementary principal takes over the new school of about 850 pupils.
